Saudi Electricity plans to export excess electricity to Europe, import during summer to meet peak demand
Saudi Electricity Company(SEC)(5110.SE) plans on exporting the excess power during winter to Europe through Turkey, based on international selling prices, according to SEC’s chairman, Saleh Al Awaji (quoted by Asharq Al-Awsat). Al Awaji added that SEC can also import electricity for short periods of peak demand during summer, rather than establishing costly power stations that would operate only for a couple of hours during summer. SEC currently benefits from the GCC Interconnection power grid and plans to connect Saudi grid with other Arabian and European countries; connection with Egypt will be complete by mid-2016 and studies for a connection with Turkey are in the final stages.
