Saudi Electricity to complete restructuring process end of year; power generation privatisation under study
The restructuring of Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) (5110.SE) is set to be completed in 2016 (delayed from end-2015), which implies the spin-off of SEC into a number of new firms, according to a media interview by Al Arabiya with Abdullah Al-Shehri, Governor of the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority (ECRA). The new structure will be comprised of six companies: four power generation companies, one transmission and one distribution, Al-Shehri added. The newly-established power generation companies would be offered to the private sector through the stock market or by partnering with local and global entities. The restructuring aims to increase private sector participation in the electricity sector through investing in SEC’s assets as well as the establishment of new companies. In a broader sense, the move is in line with the government’s strategy to lay the large power investment-burden with the private sector, Al Shehri added. (Reuters, Argaam)
